Monthly Del Puerto Canyon community cleanups continue

Late April showers didn't stop Save Del Puerto Canyon volunteers from once again heading out to the canyon to clean up trash and graffiti. As they did last year, the environmental group partnered with Love Patterson, an independent organization that hosts an annual event bringing  together volunteers to help out various community and service groups in and around the city of Patterson. 

The team that ventured into the canyon that day was diverse, made up of both locals and people who traveled up to several hours from other parts of the valley and the SF Bay Area to attend the event, and a testament to how much of a multi-regional treasure Del Puerto Canyon is in spite of the few bad actors who leave trash and graffiti behind. Through the use of biodegradable graffiti removers that are safe to use in nature, sanding sponges, a pressure washer, and persistence, these volunteers removed years of taggings in just a few hours.

Outside of the Love Patterson volunteer day event, members of Save Del Puerto Canyon also head out regularly on the third Saturday of each month to clean up trash and graffiti from the canyon. Save Del Puerto Canyon members also work with the local rangers and other county officials to secure big ticket items and larger piles of garbage for disposal.

Open roadside areas not enclosed by fences or posted signs are not automatically off limits to the public in California. Those who wish to join the group to help clean the canyon and get more involved in efforts to conserve it can rest assured that such activities, as well as their involvement in ongoing conservation efforts, are legitimate.  

For those helping to clean this valued community resource and to protect the pre-existing plans for the city park that includes the Gateway Rocks, the saga continues.

Las lluvias de finales de abril no impidieron que los voluntarios de Save Del Puerto Canyon volvieran a acudir al cañón para limpiar basura y grafitis. Como lo hicieron el año pasado, el grupo ambiental se asoció con Love Patterson, una organización independiente que organiza un evento anual que reúne a voluntarios para ayudar a varios grupos comunitarios y de servicio en la ciudad de Patterson y sus alrededores.

El equipo que se aventuró en el cañón ese día era diverso, formado tanto por lugareños como por personas que viajaron varias horas desde otras partes del valle y el área de la Bahía de San Francisco para asistir al evento, y un testimonio de lo mucho que Del Puerto Canyon es un tesoro multirregional a pesar de los pocos malos actores que dejan basura y grafitis a su paso. Mediante el uso de quitagrafitis biodegradables seguros para usar en la naturaleza, esponjas de lijado, una hidrolavadora y mucha perseverancia, estos voluntarios eliminaron años de grafitis en tan solo unas horas.

Además del evento del Día del Voluntariado Love Patterson, los miembros de Save Del Puerto Canyon también salen regularmente el tercer sábado de cada mes para limpiar la basura y los grafitis del cañón. Además, colaboran con los guardabosques locales y otros funcionarios del condado para asegurar los artículos y pilas de basura más grandes para su eliminación.

Las áreas abiertas al costado de la carretera que no estén delimitadas por cercas o señales colocadas no están automáticamente fuera del alcance del público en California. Quienes deseen unirse al grupo para ayudar a limpiar el cañón y participar más en los esfuerzos de conservación pueden estar seguros de que estas actividades, así como su participación en los esfuerzos de conservación en curso, son legítimas.

Para aquellos que ayudan a limpiar este valioso recurso comunitario y a proteger los planes preexistentes para el parque de la ciudad que incluye Gateway Rocks, la saga continúa.
