Save Del Puerto Canyon has been fighting since 2019 to protect several miles of Del Puerto Canyon from being destroyed for an agribusiness reservoir. Del Puerto Water District and the San Joaquin River Exchange Contractors Water Authority eyed more than 10 potential sites in the eastern Diablo Range and chose Del Puerto Canyon. This is a region that groups like Save Mt. Diablo have highlighted as being ecologically diverse and in need of both further study and conservation. The eastern section of Del Puerto Canyon includes the location for a previously-planned public recreation area by the City of Patterson, and the site where a teen discovered the first dinosaur fossils in California.
